Hydration & Hyaluronic Acid: From Red & Flaky to Smooth & Supple
Dry Skin & Dehydrated Skin: Not the Same Thing
Proper hydration in our body is vital for optimal health, but do you know how important it is for your skin?
Hydration affects both skin health and appearance. Dehydrated skin is rough and flaky and can appear more lined and wrinkled. Though symptoms may be similar, dehydrated skin is different from dry skin. Dry skin doesn’t produce enough oil and feels tight. Dehydrated skin lacks the humectants (compounds in the skin that protect against moisture loss) necessary for smooth suppleness. It makes the skin look flaky and crepey. Any skin type, including oily, can suffer from dehydrated skin.
In many cases, skin dehydration is exacerbated by our summer lifestyles. Time in the sun, travel, and not drinking enough water can all contribute. You can treat dehydration by supplying humectants that draw water into the skin. Replenishing the skin’s moisture level also restores and reinforces the skin’s barrier. When this barrier works correctly, it reduces moisture loss and reduces sensitivity by preventing irritants from entering the skin. As a result, skin looks, feels, and performs better.
A Major Hydration Helper: Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a superstar in the hydration world. Binding 1,000 times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring humectant found in the skin. Hyaluronic acid both plumps the skin and leaves it looking and feeling supple.
Using at least one skincare product with hyaluronic acid will help treat loss of skin volume in addition to decreasing lines and dullness. Hyaluronic acid skin solutions come in many forms: injectable fillers, topical masks, hydro serum microdermabrasion treatments, to name a few.
A Patient’s Story
One of our patients was frustrated with her red, flaky skin, but because her skin was oily she steered clear of moisturizers. She felt they contributed to her breakouts and made her skin look even more “shiny” than it already did.
By altering her homecare regimen, we were able to balance her oil production and eliminate the flaking and redness. We honed in on products that addressed her dehydrated skin due to a compromised acid mantle barrier. The hyaluronic acid in her products and hydro-microdermabrasion series contributed to her quick, impressive results. Now in her 40’s, she is thrilled to be receiving more compliments on her gorgeous skin than ever before!
